Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program

Job Description -Counselor

Reports to: House Manager /Executive Director/ Administrator Duties and Responsibilities:

•      Direct supervision of clients

•      Monitors and ensures security, safety, health and housekeeping standards

•       Meal preparation

•     Observes signs of emotional and physical illness of clients and makes emergency referrals when required

•      Supervise all activities involving minors

•       Advises minors on proper hygiene and behavior

•      Provides counseling and guidance on an individual basis or in a group setting

•       Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of individual and group activities

•      Translates (oral/written) communications when required to serve departmental needs

•       Administration of discipline and setting limits for behaviors

•       Administration of medication as needed

•      Observe client's conditions and behaviors, document or take notes for significant issues that occur and notify management

•      Report any occurrences to on coming shift, as appropriate

•      Attend mandatory monthly trainings

•      Must meet training requirements specified in section 87065.1(g), Section 87065(d) applying the "Reasonable and Prudent Parent Standard" as referenced in Section 87001(r)(1) and specified in the Welfare and Institutions Code Section 362.05 and727.

•      Must apply the reasonable and prudent parent standard as appropriate.

•      Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Pursuant to the ILS Section 87065, Personnel Requirements, all direct care staff shall meet at least one of the following qualifications:

•       A Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree.

•       A valid Child Development Teaching Permit.

•      Completed 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development, or Foster and Kinship Care Education and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth.

•      A valid certificate as an Alcohol Counselor, Drug Counselor or Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth.

•      A valid vocational training certificate, credential, or documentation demonstrating that the individual is a trade journey person who instructs children in vocational skills and have at least 100 hours of experience working with youth as a mentor, athletic coach, teacher, vocational coach, tutor, counselor, or other relevant experience as determined by the department 

•      Previously been employed as a full time staff or served as a volunteer at a group home, short­ term residential therapeutic program, or substance abuse treatment program for at least one year.

•      Relevant life experience in the child welfare, mental health or juvenile justice systems as a consumer, mentor, or caregiver or other relevant experience as determined by the department.

At a minimum, a direct care staff shall demonstrate all of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities pursuant to ILS Section 87065 (Personnel Requirements):

Knowledge and understanding of the needs of children served in a children's residential setting.

Skills and ability to engage and develop rapport with children who have varying backgrounds·.

 Skills and ability to provide consistency and behavioral limits through relationship-based interventions.

Skills to communicate effectively with the ability to solve problems in a collaborative manner.

Direct care staff shall be at least 21 years of age.

Central Valley Regional Center (CVRC)

Direct Support Professional

 

Reports to: House Manager /Executive Director/ Administrator Duties and Responsibilities:

•       Direct supervision of clients

•      Provide care and training to the clients as outlines in the program plan and the client's IPP, as well as the program plans outlines by the behavioral consultant for each client

•       Comply with facility's policies and regulations

•      To provide and supervise recreational activities in the facility and the community

•      To keep facility neat and clean

•      To prepare nutritional meals and snacks

•      To provide home-like setting for all clients living in the home

•      To assist clients with self-administration or prescribed medication

•      To recognize early signs of illness and the need for professional assistance

•       To utilize necessary community services and resources

•      To keep on-going notes as required by the regional center

•       Promote special and individual events for residents

•       Attend resident conferences, if needed

•      Attend classes and seminars to meet the requirements of continuing education including but not limited to CPI, Pro-ACT, DSPl and DSP2, etc

•       Report any occurrences to on coming shift, as appropriate

•       Attend mandatory monthly trainings

•       Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Minimum of 16 college units and/or one full time direct child care experience working directly with similar client population
